Vegan MoFo, Day 24: Party!

We’ve got a lot going on lately! In fact, this week we happen to be preparing for a party we’re throwing this coming Friday night. Due to busy-ness, I decided to approach this prompt differently than I might otherwise have during a less busy week. Instead of making party food, I thought I’d showcase foods we’ve made for parties in the past.

Chicken enchilada dip and pizza dip – just two of the reasons Mike calls me the Dip Queen of the Vegan Scene (I’m not, but that sure is cute).

Day 8 – You DO Make Friends with Salad

Salad is the prompt for today. Tacos are our theme of the week. So, it would be logical for us to make a taco salad, right? Nah. We’d rather make salad tacos! Lucky for us, our friends over at The Taco Cleanse have us covered. After all, what would taco week be without at least one recipe from The Taco Cleanse. We became friends with the brilliant minds behind The Taco Cleanse a few years ago on one of our trips to Austin, and they’re just as nice as they are good with a taco!

Vegan MoFo Day 4 – Catering

Well, tonight’s dinner was not the rousing success I was hoping for. The mission was to improve upon the worst catered meal I’ve had. I’ve had some pretty bad catered meals, but the worst was the stewed eggplant I used to get at professional society meetings – bland and flavorless, served over some dried out quinoa and sitting next to some limp vegetables.

Like many of our meals, this one started at the Farmer’s Market. We picked up some beautiful, multicolored Thai eggplant, vibrant green beans, fresh flowering quinoa, and the biggest heirloom tomato we’ve ever seen.

Vegan MoFo, Day 3 – But Where Do You Get Your Protein?

Vegans everywhere have heard it, and most of us have heard it multiple times – “But where do you get your protein?!” I even got where do you get your protein-ed by a liver doctor just a couple of months ago! (For the curious, I stared at him incredulously and said, “Plants have protein. That’s where cows get it!”) So, obviously, the short answer is: plants. Plant foods offer more than enough protein to satisfy, with rare exceptions, the protein needs of most humans. Many plants even have more protein than animal sources! As vegans, we get our protein from pretty much everything we eat.

We’re fortunate to live somewhere with a thriving farmers market culture; look at all these gorgeous plant foods!

Vegan MoFo Day 2 – Junk Food Forever!

Junk food! In the Fake Meat and True Love household, it’s like a religion. We have a Friday night tradition – we eat a bunch of junk food and watch movies that are so bad they’re good. It’s a fantastic way to spend a night! Well, tonight is Monday, but there’s still room for junk food.

One of our favorite junk food meals is the fish and chips taco. The beauty of junk food is that it’s often prepared from prepackaged food, which makes preparation a snap. In this case, the tacos were filled with Gardein fishless filets, a bag of fries, Leahey’s cheese sauce, and some malt vinegar. It’s uncharacteristic for us to use so much prepared food, but we tend to make an exception for junk food night. Continue reading

Vegan MoFo, Day 11 – Focus on a Nutrient

When we first started talking about this prompt, there was a fair bit of “…” and “???” and *shrug*. Mike joked that we should just focus on b12 by making all the noochiest things we could imagine. Gosh, we love the nutritional yeast around here. It’s hard to believe there was a time in our lives when we didn’t even know it existed.

I started flipping through Jae Steele’s Get It Ripe for ideas, noticing all the foods that contain various B vitamins: black beans, Romaine lettuce, spinach, tomatoes (thiamine); legumes, spinach (riboflavin); avocado (niacin); cauliflower (B5); avocado, cauliflower, walnuts, cabbage (B6); and of course B12 in nutritional yeast. Inspiration struck.
