Vegan MoFo, Day 1 – Your Favorite Food

Greetings and salutations, and welcome to our edition of Vegan MoFo 2016! It’s been a while, so we hope you’ll bear with us as we dust off the old keyboard and bring you some of our latest and greatest ideas in vegan cooking and eating.

There’s going to be a lot of pizza over the first week of MoFo because Sarra’s favorite food in the whole world is, in fact, pizza. There is something about a big, flat slab of carbohydrates smothered in delicious toppings that just sets the mouth to tap dancing. It doesn’t matter what you put on it, she loves it (as do I).

Halloween is another source of big, big love in the Fake Meat True Love household. We love to pull out all the stops – decorate the house, put on costumes, throw a big party…heck, even our Halloween food is thematic! So, it should come as no surprise to anyone that we ate a Halloween-themed pizza for dinner yesterday: Vampire Killer Pizza with Ghostly Salami and Olive Spiders.

It all started with our favorite pizza dough – a simple concoction of flour, water, yeast, and olive oil. We let it rise for one to two hours so we can have a nice, airy crust and then spread it out in a baking pan. A few minutes in the oven to get it crispy, and we’re ready to start topping. This one started out with a layer of super, super garlicky tomato sauce that I made from some sauce we home-canned last summer. Oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (oh, and a few scraps of the salami!) had been happily bubbling away in the rich sauce for at least a half an hour before finding it’s way onto the pizza.

Prepping the toppings. I had to practice making the olive spider.

Next, a layer of glorious, glorious cheese. We live in a golden age of vegan cheese, but for this one we kept it simple – Daiya mozzarella. On top of that, we added the spookiness: ghost shapes carved out of Yves’ salami (brushed with olive oil so they crisped up like the pepperoni of our youth), spiders made out of sliced olives, and more garlic (because you can never be too careful). It went back in the oven to finish up, and then we put it in our faces!

Ready to go in the oven!

It is a sublime experience to share love through food. I thoroughly enjoyed making Sarra’s favorite food for her, and I look forward to doing it many, many more times!

Sarra: I think it’s cute that your ghosts are PacMan ghosts.    Mike: Those are the only ghosts I know!

Cheers,

Mike
